A degree apprenticeship is where you work and study to achieve a degree in a certain field. This means you\u2019ll be working in a job where the work that you do contributes to the running of a business or organisation, however you\u2019ll be also be spending some of that time learning at a university and focusing on your studies.<\/p>\n

So, what\u00a0is a\u00a0degree\u00a0apprenticeship?<\/h2>\n

A degree apprenticeship is a programme that combines paid\u00a0work\u00a0with university study. As an\u00a0apprentice\u00a0at this level,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0be working\u00a0towards a Bachelor\u2019s (Level 6) or\u00a0Master\u2019s\u00a0degree (Level 7).<\/p>\n

How do they work?<\/h3>\n

>As a degree apprentice,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0be employed in\u00a0your workplace like any other member\u00a0of\u00a0staff.\u00a0You\u2019ll\u00a0be paid and you are entitled to holiday leave,\u00a0sickness\u00a0and other\u00a0possible benefits\u00a0they might offer.<\/p>\n

But,\u00a0as an apprentice\u00a0at\u00a0any\u00a0level,\u00a020% of your time in work\u00a0per week\u00a0is dedicated to your studies. This can look different\u00a0depending on\u00a0your role.\u00a0\u00a0It could\u00a0involve\u00a0attending university once a week, or\u00a0a day focusing on completing university work. Alternatively, you might study on block release, where you\u00a0spend a week or longer at university.<\/p>\n

Why would you choose to do a\u00a0degree apprenticeship?<\/h3>\n

There are\u00a0many\u00a0reasons\u00a0why people choose to go to university,\u00a0but why would you choose to do a degree apprenticeship as opposed to the more traditional route of studying full time?<\/p>\n

One of the biggest appeals of doing a degree apprenticeship is that\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0be able to earn while you learn. Working\u00a0full-time\u00a0will pay you a\u00a0salary from your employer, and because your\u00a0tuition fees\u00a0are\u00a0paid by\u00a0your employer\u00a0(or in some circumstances\u00a0through government funding)\u00a0you are not responsible for funding your studies.\u00a0So,\u00a0when you finish your degree,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0not\u00a0left with a large\u00a0student loan.<\/p>\n

Another reason that\u00a0draws\u00a0people to doing a degree apprenticeship\u00a0is\u00a0the multiple opportunities to develop your skillset.\u00a0As an employee,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0have the opportunity\u00a0to\u00a0gain\u00a0practical skills within your chosen industry,\u00a0which are highly valued by employers. But\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0also have the\u00a0chance to work alongside\u00a0professionals\u00a0which is\u00a0a great way\u00a0to network and\u00a0learn\u00a0from experienced individuals.<\/p>\n

How to find and apply for degree apprenticeships?<\/h3>\n

You can do a degree apprenticeships\u00a0within many different\u00a0industries,\u00a0but where do you find the opportunities?<\/p>\n

Before you begin your\u00a0job\u00a0search,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0likely you have an idea of what industry\u00a0you\u2019d\u00a0like work and study in.\u00a0Researching the different\u00a0opportunities\u00a0is\u00a0a great way\u00a0to start the process\u00a0and to\u00a0find specific roles\u00a0you\u2019d\u00a0like to\u00a0apply for.<\/p>\n

As degree apprenticeships\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0exactly like applying for a job, university websites\u00a0like\u00a0UCAS <\/a>advertise programs you can apply for, the same way\u00a0you\u2019d\u00a0apply to be a\u00a0full-time\u00a0student.<\/p>\n

Because of the working element of a degree apprenticeship, these roles can also be advertised on employment websites\u00a0that\u00a0you\u2019d\u00a0use for other jobs.<\/p>\n

Perhaps you\u2019re\u00a0already aware of some organisations\u00a0you\u2019d\u00a0like to work for.\u00a0If this is the case,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0worth checking\u00a0their\u00a0websites as\u00a0not all\u00a0companies\u00a0advertise\u00a0their\u00a0training programs\u00a0on\u00a0employment sites.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0important to keep an open mind\u00a0when searching for a degree apprenticeship. Do lots of\u00a0research, attend relevant events\u00a0and\u00a0careers\u00a0fairs\u00a0and\u00a0remember that you need to check for new\u00a0job listings regularly.<\/p>\n

Am I eligible?<\/h3>\n

Every course\u00a0is\u00a0different,\u00a0but\u00a0all\u00a0these jobs will\u00a0advertise what entry requirements\u00a0they have.\u00a0For degree apprenticeships, you need to check that\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0applying for the program\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0right for you.<\/p>\n

At a minimum,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0likely that\u00a0they\u2019ll\u00a0be searching for candidates who would\u00a0also be eligible for full-time study\u00a0at degree level.<\/p>\n

Tips for a strong application<\/h3>\n

As\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0already covered,\u00a0applying to do a degree apprenticeship is like applying for a job, so that application process is similar.<\/p>\n

As you would when applying for a job role, you need a CV ready that\u00a0gives a good presentation of your\u00a0skills and experience.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a good idea\u00a0to\u00a0also\u00a0have a cover letter that\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0who you are.\u00a0These can be adapted to each job role you apply for.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, you might need to fill in an application\u00a0and\u00a0write a personal statement\u00a0\u2013 you\u00a0could\u00a0adapt this from your cover letter!<\/p>\n

Either way,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0important to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0who you are when making these applications.\u00a0You need to make references to your\u00a0achievements,\u00a0prove that\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0passionate about the field you wish to work in\u00a0and why you want the role in question.<\/p>\n
